The internet has been teasing this new music video of a song Meherma, by Haris Haroon (ig: @harisharoonmusic) lately and so upon the release of the full and final version, I went to listen to the song, and then to watch it, and I listen after a while again.

The Song
I went back to the song because I liked the melody. Very sweet, slow, calm, and very subtle texture here and there, fused with the vocals very harmoniously.

To me, when music and voice become one, lyrics become an extension of the music too and I don’t pay much attention to the lyrics anymore. It turns into the sound of an instrument, and I find it odd myself but this is how my mind process it.

This is exactly what was happening with Meherma. I had to listen to the lyrics. I had to be mindful of the words by ignoring the music.

Just to be clear, it is not a bad thing. The composition is excellent. The lyrics are beautiful. I simply could not connect to the lyrics as much as I am to the music in this song.

I can say I heard or felt a touch of a very popular classic song in there but I will not name that out.

The Video
Visually, the video is beautifully done as well. It goes with the pace of music, lyrics, and the melody. It tells the story song is about.

But I felt it disconnected from itself with introduce of another character, which was the mother of the lead, Eman Shah. I think her solo act delivering the feel of her isolated with her own thought was beautiful enough.

While watching, I also feel that change of her outfits would add an extra layer of tension or sadness by showing the passage of time. She did change into a different outfit towards the end, but three to four changes would make it a better visual.

And I did not like Urdu Typography at all…

Overall
Although it is a sad song with, sad ending, but from start to end, it has hopefulness. The melody, the tone, is leaning toward “hope”, for me.

If I don’t over-think the elements I talked about up there, it is a beautiful video, good song, great soft slow music. And you should watch it, and if you are like me, you would enjoy listening to it more than watching it. This, in my opinion, is a mega positive point for any song.
